Cleaning and Caring for
your Jewelry
Proper care and cleaning of your
jewelry will enhance your enjoyment and reward you with years of pleasurable
wear. Below you will find a variety of ideas and tips to help you nurture your
one-of-a-kind work of art and other fine jewelry.
-
Store jewelry away from
sunlight. Over time the sun can fade natural stones.
-
Store jewelry in a jewelry
box with separate compartments as stones can scratch other stones and metals
can scratch other metals. The pouches/jewelry bags we sell are great for
this purpose.
-
Never wear your jewelry
when in water, such as swimming or bathing. Chlorine and salt water are
harsh, even tap water can leave mineral deposits that wear down metal and
stones.
-
Do not wear your jewelry
while working out, gardening, participating in sports, doing household
chores or any activity that might result in sharp blows to your jewelry.
Even diamonds are susceptible to damage from an impact, which could result
in chipping and cracking.
-
Put your jewelry on after
you have applied your make-up, lotion, hairspray and perfume. The chemicals
in these products can leave a residue and damage certain stones and metals.
-
Your jewelry can tarnish
if left out in the open air. Store your jewelry in a closed jewelry box to
prevent tarnishing. Or you can purchase anti-tarnish paper strips to store
with your jewelry.
-
Clean your jewelry with a
sunshine polishing cloth. (We highly recommend these because they have a
anti-tarnish solution in them yet they are mild and inexpensive).
-
Pearls need special care
and cleaning. Never store your pearls in a zip lock bag. Never use
anything but a mild soapy water to clean them and do not soak them. Never
use a brush of any kind on pearls. Try to wipe your pearls down with a soft
cloth after wearing them.
-
Never use paper towels or
tissue paper to wipe your jewelry. These products have fibers that can
scratch metals and stones.
-
Always be sure your
jewelry is clean and dry before storing it away.
